John R. Gibbons correspondence, 1913-1917 (bulk 1914-1915).

Gibbons became a member of the United Confederate Veterans in Arkansas, rising to the rank of major general commanding the Arkansas Division of the U.C.V. This collection of his papers chiefly concerns his involvement in the U.C.V. Much of the correspondence relates to U.C.V. reunions, particulary one held in Richmond, Va., in June 1915. The letters are dated from Nov. 1913 to Oct. 1915, with one additional letter from Aug. 1917.

Confederate veteran and mining and civil engineer. John R. Gibbons was born in Richmond, Va., in 1843. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the First Virginia Cavalry under J.E.B. Stuart. This unit was part of the Army of Northern Virginia, and as such, saw action in many of the important battles of the war, including Chancellorsville, Sharpsburg, Cold Harbor, Spottsylvania, and Gettysburg.
