These papers, originals and copies, consist of correspondence, documents, accounts, and vouchers relating mainly to General Plácido Vega's secret mission to obtain articles of war and funds in San Francisco, California, for the republican government of Benito Juárez in Mexico against the French invaders of Napoleon III. There is also material on Vega's activities in connection with volunteers from the United States in forming an expedition to invade Mexico, the Mexican "Juntas Patrióticas" in the United States, and military operations in Mexico (1858-1869). Includes correspondence with Benito Juarez, Matias Romero and Jesus Gonzalez Ortega. See also the published articles of Robert Ryal Miller on General Vega.

Military and political leader. Born 1822 near Teúl, Zacatecas; died 1881 in Saltillo. Served as jefe político de Tlaltenango (1855) and Fresnillo (1857), and Diputado in the Congreso Zacatecano (1857). Governor of Zacatecas (1858).
