The collection consists of two items: untitled poem, signed C.G. Eastman, in three six-line stanzas, with first line Alas! how soon the heart forgets. The poem is in remembrance of someone who had died one year before; on the verso is the notation Woodstock, Feb. 6, 1944, C to S. Also includes engraved portrait of Eastman, signed, undated, credited to Capewell & Kimmel, N.Y.

Charles Eastman was an author and editor, most closely associated with the Vermont Patriot. Born in Maine and raised in Vermont, Eastman graduated from the University of Vermont and worked as a journalist and author, founding and editing two newspapers. He later moved to Montpelier, where he was owner and editor of the Patriot. He contributed poems to numerous publications; many of his verses celebrated the rural New England life.
