Ecumenical Agreements Correspondence and Other Material 1995-2001

This series comprises correspondence and other material generated or retained by the Rev. H. George Anderson, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) from 1995-2001. These records represent the ELCA's work in reaching ecumenical decisions and agreements with the Episcopal Church USA, the Reformed Churches, and the Roman Catholic Church. Records date from 1995-2001 and while the bulk of it is typewritten and printed electronic mail correspondence, this series also includes resource material, such as topical papers, presentations, news articles, news releases, some of Bishop Anderson's notes taken during meetings related to these ecumenical agreements, his annotated copies of draft agreements, and informational material used by the ELCA to answers questions of its members regarding the agreements reached between the ELCA and these church bodies. The largest amount of correspondence pertains to "Called to Common Mission," (CCM) the name given to the full communion agreement reached between the ELCA and the Episcopal Church USA. Most of this correspondence is to Bishop Anderson from ELCA congregation members and pastors. Also included are the bishop's written replies to this correspondence. Subject matter for this correspondence is voicing approval or disapproval for the agreement or it is from persons relating discussions or news to Bishop Anderson pertaining to CCM. The correspondence from synod bishops to Bishop Anderson illuminates the role the synodical bishops had in transmitting to the presiding bishop what was the overall opinion of members in their synods as they related to these ecumenical agreements.
