John Greville Agard Pocock was born in London, England on March 7, 1924. Pocock attended Medbury School from 1932-1937 and Christ's College in Christchurch, New Zealand from 1937-1941. From 1942-1946 he earned both bachelor's and master's degrees at Canterbury University College in the University of New Zealand. In 1948 he returned to England to obtain a PhD from Cambridge.
