Hank Mathiason interview, 1997.

Hank Mathiason was born in Outlook, Montana. He was a longtime brand inspector for the Montana Dept. of Livestock. In this interview Hank discusses his experiences working for the Livestock Department as a brand inspector from the 1960s until 1995 when he retired. He describes changes in procedures and goals; rustlers and rustling; field work; using coins to mark cattle; difficulties enforcing laws; interaction with other state agencies; and his retirement. The office of the General Recorder of Marks and Brands was established in 1872 by a legislative act providing that the Clerk of the Supreme Court maintain an office for recording brands for cattle, horses, and sheep. An act approved in 1877 moved the duties to the Territorial Treasurer, who maintained these duties until 1887 when they were transferred to the Board of Stock Commissioners.
