The collection consists of diaries of William Cooper from 1859-1887. Short daily entries are illustrated by drawings in color. Topics include farming, the weather, his law practice, African Americans, travel, and events of the Civil War and Reconstruction. Cooper's third wife, Julia, his son, John W., and James L. Alcorn, a neighbor, are frequently mentioned. Diaries for 1860 and 1870 are also available on microfilm. Diaries for 1862 and 1886 are available on microfilm only. The diary for 1864 is available on microfilm only. Diaries for 1859, 1865, 1867, 1872, 1876, 1882, 1883, 1884, and 1887 are available as photocopies only.
