The collection consists of miscellaneous business, legal, and personal papers of J.F. Burke, a few personal items of Mrs. J.F. Burke, and a small group of papers of Mrs. Burke's father, D.G. Cotting. Most materials deal with Burke's Atlanta real estate at 233 Peachtree St., between Harris and Cain Streets, previously owned by Marie Bullock (Mrs. Rufus Bullock); other Atlanta real estate and business transactions (1867-1896) are also documented. Papers of Burke's wife, Louise Cotting Burke, include family correspondence, a will fragment, and two photographs of her; papers of her father, David G. Cotting, Georgia Secretary of State (1860-1873), include his correspondence with Alexander H. Stephens (1860-1867), two journals (diaries; 1832-1863), and his will (1874).
