The Lucile Swan papers consist of the correspondence of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin to Lucile Swan written during the years 1932-1955. Swan met Teilhard de Chardin in 1929, shortly after she arrived in Beijng to work at the Cenozoic Laboratory. This collection of letters is evidence of the life-long friendship that grew out of that first meeting. The earliest extant letter from Teilhard is dated August 30, 1932, the last March 30, 1955, just before his death. This correspondence has been published in The letters of Teilhard de Chardin and Lucile Swan, edited by Thomas M. King, S.J., and Mary Wood Gilbert (Georgetown University Press, 1993). Also included in the collection are typescripts, mimeographs, offprints, and translations of works by Teilhard de Chardin.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, paleontologist and philosopher, was born May 1, 1881, at Sarcenat, in the Dept. of Puy de Dôin, France, and educated at the College of Mongréin Villefranche-sur-Saô. Lucile Swan, painter and sculptor, was born in Sioux City, Iowa on May 10, 1890. She received her early education at Episcopal Boarding School. In 1903 the family moved to Chicago, and in 1908 she began study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Swan married artist Jerome Blum in 1912.
