William Mackenzie papers, 1843-1846.

This collection consists of papers and correspondence sent to the Georgia Historical Society by William Mackenzie. In the early 1840s, he was asked by William B. Hodgson (1800-1871) and I.K. Tefft (1794-1862) of the Georgia Historical Society to search records in libraries and private collections in Scotland and in England for information concerning the founding of the Colony of Georgia. These letters and papers are the result of Dr. Mackenzie's search. In addition to the letters he meticulously copied a number of records, and the copies are a part of this collection. He also procured books and pamphlets, most of which are still in the Society's library. The larger part of his search was done in Scotland, so there is more information on the Scottish settlers than on the English.
