Collection includes a copy of a handwritten account book, "Personal Account Book of John McLaws, Joseph City, Arizona;" a typescript volume of letters from colonists which appeared in the "Deseret News," describing in detail the history and development of the Mormon settlements on the Little Colorado River; and a copy of a hand-drawn map of Sunset, Arizona (1881).

John McLaws was born in Salt Lake City on September 14, 1852. He trained as a carpenter and worked on the Mormon Temple at St. George, Utah, before travling to Arizona in 1876 with William C. Allen's Company (later St. Joseph Stake). McLaws is notable for his wide variety of occupations, including postmaster, carpenter, blacksmith, shoemaker, watchmaker, painter, butcher, sheep-shearer, farmer, mechanic, and teacher.
