Group of letters pertaining to a campaign to secure a pardon for a murderer at Dannemora Prison, New York. Jeremiah Clifford was an ex-p.o.w. of the Civil War who was charged with the death of a fellow soldier. Clifford's friends contended that the incident was an accident that resulted from a drunken rage, hot cold-blooded murder. The petition was addressed to Governor Reuben Fenton.

Born in the Town of Carroll, Chautauqua County, New York on 4 July 1819, and was educated in a rural school. At the age of twenty he moved to Jamestown, where he entered the lumber business and soon became a prosperous merchant. He also studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1841.
