Letters and poems written to and by Scribner. Many letters are from friends and others abroad, including several artists. Several letters pertain to Scribner's book "Where Did Life Begin?" The collection includes correspondence, 1871-1906; letters to Mrs. Scribner, 1877-1886; letters of introduction from Roscoe Conkling and Edwin D. Morgan; poems and other items, including an article concerning Colonel Charles S. Francis. Correspondents include Roscoe Conkling, John A. Dix, Alfred B. Street, John M. Francis, T.C. Platt, A.B. Dix was born in Boscawen, New Hampshire on July 24 1798, the son of Timothy Dix and Abigail Wilkins, and brother of composer Marion Dix Sullivan. He was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, and joined the US Army as an ensign in May 1813, serving under his father until the latter's death a few months later.
