Includes ledgers and receipts relating to the family operation of a general store in Downing's Wharf, later renamed Willis Wharf, Virginia. The receipts cover the years 1842 to 1911, and are for items purchased by the store from wholesalers and importers in Baltimore, Maryland and New York, such as dry goods, clothing, liquor, drugs, household goods, tobacco, saddles, tools, and building materials. Also included are eight ledgers containing customer account information for the years 1853 to 1897. Some of the ledgers include an alphabetical index of customer's names. Other items in the collection include receipts for court recording fees and tax receipts, and a postmaster's account and record book, 1902-1905 of George F. Willis, containing a daily record of cancellations and sales of stamps, envelopes, and postcards.
