The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association of the Union was founded in 1853 by Ann Pamela Cunningham. The purpose of the Association was to purchase Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, in order to restore the property and open the grounds to visitors and admirers who desired to see Washington's house and tomb. Victorine E. du Pont was the sister of Col. Henry Algernon du Pont and the wife of Antoine L. Foster, whom she married on October 18, 1877. She was a founding member of the Garden Club of Wilmington and from 1911 to 1934, was vice-regent for Delaware, Regents of Mount Vernon, Virginia (the Mount Vernon Ladies' Assn. of the Union).
