The papers dated prior to 1790 are chiefly letters to George Carrington. His correspendents include his son, Edward C., his brother, Codrington, and his nephew, Robert C., who wrote from Bridgetown, Barbados, regarding the settlement of the estate of Robert C. Carrington, George's brother who lived in "Carrington Valley," Barbados. Reference is made to a law passed 29 January 1672 in Barbados which made Negroes real estate, and "proper restrictions about clothing the Negroes." Among the other correspondents is Nicholas Davies, for whom George Carrington managed his affairs. The remaining papers consist, for the most part, of letters to Peyton R. Carrington, who lived in the vicinity of Richmond, Virginia, and they are replies to his requests for genealogical data on the Carrington family. A privately issued biographical monograph by Garland Evans Hopkins, "Colonel Carrington of Cumberland," 1942, son of George Carrington, includes an extensive genealogical chart of the American line of the family, particularly the Virginia family.

Edward Carrington (February 11, 1748 – October 28, 1810) was an American soldier and statesman from Virginia. During the American Revolutionary War he became a lieutenant colonel of artillery in the Continental Army. He distinguished himself as quartermaster general in General Nathanael Greene’s southern campaign. He commanded artillery at Monmouth and Yorktown.
