Big Basin : photograph album, 1900.

Photographs taken by Hill of Sequoia sempervirens and its habitat in Big Basin, including Waddell Creek, and Mt. Ben Lomond. Most of the photos were probably taken on the exploring expedition which started for Big Basin on May 15, 1900. They followed the only route then existing -- by train from San Jose to Boulder Creek, and from Boulder Creek to the end of the road at "Slippery Rock" by horsedrawn vehicle. Represented are the founding members of the Sempervirens Club among whom are Hill, W.W. Richards, R.S. Kooser, Carrie Stevens Walter, Mrs. S.A. Jones, J.F. Coope, J.Q. Packard, H.L. Middleton, Charles Wesley Reed and their guide, Andy Baldwin, and cook, Thomas Croon.

While his studio produced many individual and group portraits, he also became well known for his views of the Santa Clara Valley region and the Santa Cruz mountains. He became an ardent conservationist and, working with other members of his newly founded Sempervirens Club, lobbied throughout the state against commercial cutting of re...

The Sempervirens Fund seeks to preserve and protect the natural character of California's Santa Cruz Mountains and to encourage appropriate public enjoyment of this environment. To achieve this they acquire suitable land in a working partnership with the State of California and other public and private agencies. These land acquisitions are both additions for Big Basin Redwoods and Castle Rock state parks, and links between parks and open spaces to provide an integrated parkland system. The group...
