In 1888, the Alabama State Troops was composed of three infantry regiments; the First Infantry Regiment headquartered in Mobile, the Second Infantry Regiment headquartered in Montgomery, and the Third Infantry Regiment headquartered in Selma (Adjuant General's Annual Report, 1888). The First Infantry Regiment was officially organized in 1881 from several volunteer militia units. The regiment was called to active duty during the Spanish-American War in 1898. It served at the Mexican Border in 1916 and 1917 in response to Pancho Villa's invasion. In 1917 Sept. the regiment became the 123rd U.S. Infantry and was mustered into Federal service at Camp Wheeler, Georgia. This series consists summarily of two groups of records. The first group consists of records sent to the Adjutant General's Office by the regiment. The second group is composed of the records maintained by the First Infantry Regiment. This group includes the correspondence of Colonel Francis M. Maddox and contains excellent information on the unit's election process and other activities. The files also contain extensive information regarding the day-to-day activities of the First Infantry when it was stationed in Nogales, Arizona. In addition, present are records of the 123rd U.S. Infantry when it was stationed at Camp Wheeler. Included in the records are payroll records, muster rolls, oaths of enlistment, expenditure information, detailed lists of recruits, discharges, property returns, regulations, and other administrative files.
