Minutes of a court case, 1877 Mar., Talladega Co., Ala. The case involves the murder of James M. Hancrow by John Smith. Smith asks the court in Talladega, Ala., for a change of venue, because he believes he cannot receive a fair and impartial trial in the counties of Talladega, Clay, Shelby, and Calhoun. Smith thinks the county newspapers have prejudiced the people against him. The newspapers support capitol punishment. The press believes murder has run amok. To quell such a state, the newspapers think John Smith should be hung to preclude any future acts of murder.
