Documents concerning the ordnance department of the Yard. The first is a report signed by John A. Dahlgren, commandant of the Yard, to John P. Hale, chair of the Senate Committee on Naval Affairs, 14 Feb. 1862, in reply to questions about a proposal for expansion of the department's facilities. Attached are copies of a site plan, construction estimate, and explanation dated August 1859, when the proposal was first submitted. The last document is a letter signed from Dahlgren to Hale, 24 March 1862, urging the conversion of the Yard to an ordnance yard and the reorganization of the Navy's Bureau of Ordnance as a directorship.
