In 1919 Edward Bushnell was appointed publicity agent for the University of Pennsylvania. His appointment began a long and expanding effort at public relations at the University. In 1954 the Department of Public Relations expanded its work to include two new units, Motion Picture Services and the Office of Radio and Television. The Athletic Association was formed in 1873 by a small group of students. The University Athletic Association was founded in 1882 at the invitation of Provost William Pepper. The Association dedicated themselves to preparing a playing field for competition. In May of 1883 the Board of Trustees established a Department of Physical Culture. Intercollegiate Athletics at the University advanced with the opening of Franklin Field in 1895 and the opening of Weightman Hall and the Gymnasium in 1904. ...
