Interview conducted by Odessa Neaman as part of the LDS Native American Oral History Project by the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University on June 27, 1990. Chavez, a Navajo, talks about his experiences growing up in Sawmill, Arizona. He talks about his early family life. He describes his conversion to the Mormon Church and his experiences on the Mormon Church Placement Program. He talks about his decision to attend Brigham Young University and his participation in the Lamanite Generation. He discusses his activities as a Mormon missionary in Roanoke, Virginia. He talks about his experiences as a Mormon, his feelings about having separate Indian or integrated wards, his reactions to the excommunication of George P. Lee, and his relationships with Mormons.
