Helen's Tower album, 1850-1897.

Poems, sketches, and a guest list relating to Helen's Tower, the monumental library built at Clandeboye, County Down, by the first Marquess of Dufferin and Ava for his mother, to which many great writers of the day sent contributions. The most significant items are four autograph versions of the poem "Helen's Tower, Clandeboye" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The first two, headed "fullest form" and "2nd form," are on opposite sides of the same leaf, with some autograph notes on the integral leaf; a portion of the first leaf was cut away at Tennyson's request, leaving only the first stanza of each version intact. The third, headed "5th," has at the foot of the page ANsS by Tennyson and his wife to Lord Dufferin. The last is dated 15 March 1862. Also present are a signed manuscript of Lady Caroline Norton's poem "Helen's Tower," April 1863; two pages of signatures of persons present at the dedication of the tower on 20 November 1850; and three sketches of the Tower, the first by Lord Dufferin.
