The compiler was the daughter of Sullivan and Lydia Allen Dorr. Thomas Poynton Ives (1834-1865) succeeded his father in the firm of Brown and Ives (1857), served in the Civil War, and in 1865 went on leave of absence to Europe, where he married and, one month later, died.
