The papers of Nancy M. Farriss reflect her professional career, largely during her years at the University of Pennsylvania. Her Professional papers include correspondence, 1974-1989; files on her appointments, 1982-1990; a variety of fellowships and grants, among them the MacArthur Foundation, the Guggenheim, and the National Geographic Society, 1959-1987; and research budgets, 1983-1990. Also documented in her Professional papers are her writings and publications, 1976-1990. Her academic course offerings on Latin American History are also available in this collection, as is information on her various professional activities. The Ethnohistory Program series offers a complete overview of the program from initial proposals and working papers in 1975 through the workshops and symposia offered every year to 1989. In addition to documentation of the academic concerns, this series also offers a comprehensive financial overview of the program.

Nancy M. Farriss graduated summa cum laude from Barnard College in 1959, and in 1965 she received her Ph.D. in History from the University of London. From 1967 to 1968 she lectured in Hispanic Studies at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica. Farriss left Jamaica for the College of William and Mary where she held the position of Assistant Professor of History.
