Notebook of medical lectures, 1808-1847 London, Middlesex Co., England.

Jonathan Couch (1789-1870) was a general practitioner of Polperro,Cornwall, who became one of the greatest authorities on British fishes. He published a monumental four volume work on the history of the fishes of Great Britain in 1866-1867. His notebook, evidently made while a medical student at Guy's and St. Thomas's Hospitals in London, contains notes on lectures by Henry Cline and Sir Astley Paston Cooper. At the end of the notebook is "Notes for an essay on the rationality and intellectual powers of animals," material which was developed in 1847 into his book, Illustrations of instinct.
