Photostatic copies of letters from Isaac Stevens and others to Suckley, and from Suckley to his family while serving as surgeon and naturalist with the Stevens surveying expedition in the Rocky Mountains region for the Northern Pacific Railroad. There is information on the expedition's route from St. Paul (Minn.) to Fort Benton in Montana Territory; on its relations with the Indians along the route; on the terms of Suckley's contract with the expedition; and on Father Pierre Jean de Smet, Catholic missionary to the Indians.

Pierre-Jean De Smet, missionary to Native Americans, was born in France in 1801 and educated in Belgium. He came to the United States in 1821 as a novice and took his vows in Missouri in 1823, but ran a school for Native American children in Missouri from 1823 to 1830. He returned to Europe in 1831 and came back to the United States in 1838 when he began working as a missionary to the Potawatomi. George Suckley, United States Army surgeon and naturalist, participated in the Northern Pacific Railroad Route Survey led by Isaac I. Stevens. The party made explorations and scientific investigations from St. Paul, Minnesota, to Puget Sound in Washington during the years 1853-57. Suckley collaborated with James G.
