Henry Hunt Snelling, pioneer in photographic journalism, was born at Plattsburg, N.Y. in 1816. Snelling spent his early childhood in army posts especially at Fort Snelling (Minn.) where his father, Josiah Snelling, served as commander. He later pursued several occupations the most notable being in the daugerreotype business in New York during the 1840's and 1850's where he published numerous pieces on the history and art of photography.
