Francis Asbury (1745-1816) was one of the first two bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States. Born in England, he came to America in 1771; in 1784 he, with Thomas Coke, was named the head of the Methodist Church in America. There is a statue to his memory in Washington, DC, and in many towns and cities across America one may find an Asbury United Methodist Church. Jesse Jennett was a Louisiana poet. Francis Asbury (1745-1816) was a founder of American Methodism. A Methodist minister under John Wesley in England, he traveled to America in 1771 as a missionary and was elected bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1784.
