These files document Governor Charles Morehead's use of the governor's power and privilege to pardon convicts and to postpone and remit fines. Included are petitions from people convicted of a number of different offenses, from breach of peace and gambling to assault and murder. Also included are petitions for pardon of a man convicted in the death of a slave by whipping; for the remission of the fines of a man who sold an unruly slave to another state, but was then obliged to pay the fines levied against the slave; and a petition to the governor from a fellow member of the American Party, requesting him not to pardon a certain Democrat, who would then be able to vote.

James Turner Morehead became the twelfth governor and the first native-born Kentuckian to hold that office after the death of Governor John Breathitt in February 1834.
