Elizabeth Phenix Wiesner grew up in Washington, D.C., and Brooklyn Heights, and attended Wells College and Stanford University. After graduating in 1938 she moved to Boston where she worked as a medical secretary and was a member of the Massachusetts Women's Defense Corps. She served with the American Red Cross in Italy and North Africa (1943-1944) and with the Office of Strategic Services in Europe (1944-1946). She entered the Foreign Service and served at the American embassy in Berlin in 1948...
