Catalogue of engravings, 1863.

The volume is divided into several parts. The first part is an index to the engravings Gaffield owned, including the name of the artist who painted the work that was later engraved, the subject of the engraving, the name of the engraver, the state of the plate, the source of the purchase, the cost (in code), and remarks. The second part contains Gaffield's thoughts on his collection, while the third part consists of criticisms and remarks made about engraving by other collectors, writers, and artists. The fourth part lists the members of the Boston Art Club. A printed list of eighty of Gaffield's engravings photographed by Marshall and Company follows. Several clippings are pasted inside the front cover. Gaffield stated the purpose of this manuscript in what he called "The Design of this Volume" as follows: "Having gathered during the past six years a few gems in the art of engraving, I thought it would be interesting to collect, in a simple volume, the criticisms & remarks made by learned connoisseurs, artists or writers on art concerning the pictures of which they are the engraved copies, the engravings themselves, & the painters & engravers who designed and executed them."

1 v. (106 p. + 200 blank p.) ; 26 cm.
