The papers of Samuel Swezy Seward consist chiefly of correspondence related to his personal and family life as well as his career in business, politics, and government. Personal Correspondence consists mostly of letters Samuel Seward received from members of his immediate family, including his sons Benjamin, William Henry, and his daughter Louisa Cornelia. Their letters generally concern personal and family matters. The letters from William Henry Seward detail his time as a student at Union College in Schenectady, New York. 1817-1820; subsequent move to Auburn, New York in 1823, where he entered law practice with Elijah Miller, the father of wife, Frances Adeline Miller, and later launched his career in politics and government. The collection also includes correspondence and papers related to the establishment of the S.S. Seward Institute; accounts, receipts, and other papers related to his personal and business finances; schedule of lands, deeds, and land surveys related to his investment in real estate; legal papers and correspondence of the executors related to the settlement of the Samuel Swezy Seward Estate.

William Henry Seward was born in Florida, Orange County, New York, on May 16, 1801. He was the son of Samuel S. Seward and Mary (Jennings) Seward. He graduated from Union College in 1820, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1822. In 1823, he moved to Auburn, New York, where he entered Judge Elijah Miller's law office. Samuel Swezy Seward was born on December 5, 1768. About 1800, he settled in the Town of Florida, Orange County, New York, where he would set up a medical practice and establish a mercantile business. In 1795 he married Mary Jennings of Goshen, New York, and they would have five children of which the most famous was William Henry Seward (1801-1872). Samuel S.
