ArchivalResource

Letter book, 1819-1835 (bulk 1819-1825).

Consists of manuscript copies of some 40 letters written over a sixteen year period, many of them to one friend: Sarah Ellis. They describe Adams' experiences as a school teacher, the religious and social conditions in New York City, and her own spiritual condition. The letters mention temperance, the Peale Museum, her reading interests (and perceived deficiencies in the Medfield, MA library), an 1819 meeting with some Hawaiian natives about to return to their island homes in the company of missionaries, and an encounter with missionaries about to embark for Jerusalem. Letters are numbered and datelined, but addressee is not always obvious.
