John Edwin Bakeless was born on December 30, 1894, in Carlisle, Pa. He married Katherine Little in 1920. Bakeless attended Williams College (1914-1918) and, though his final year was not completed because of enlistment in the army, received his bachelor's degree in absentia in 1918.
