Nathan S. Jarvis letters, 1833-1852.

Jarvis, a U.S. Army surgeon, describes his journey (1833) from Baltimore, Maryland, to Fort Snelling (Minn.) via horse-railroad and steamboat; physical facilities, daily life, recreation, visitors, and Dakota and Ojibwe Indians at the fort (1833-1836); Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri (1836); his service at Florida posts during the Seminole War (1837-1838) and at Fort Jesup, Louisiana (1837, 1840-1845); military actions, medical care, and the Texas and Mexican countryside during the Mexican War (1845-1848); and life at Fort Brown, Texas (1849, 1852).
