Seán O'Faoláin was born John Whelan in County Cork, Ireland; he came from a loyalist family, and initally opposed the Easter Rebellion of 1916, but the excessive force used by the British to suppress the rebellion inspired his sense of Irish nationalism. He took Gaelic lessons and earned a scholarship to University College, Cork, changing his name to the Gaelic form. Michael Francis O'Donovan was born into poverty in Cork, Ireland; unable to afford schooling, he was largely self-educated, and wrote extensively as a child. He joined the Irish Republican Army as a teenager, fought for Irish independence and later for Ulster's inclusion in the Republic, and was arrested and jailed as a result.
