Chronological list of over 14,000 French auction sale catalogs (1630 to 1993) with some indexing by names of owners/estates and some identification of auctioneers, number of lots/pages, and of institutions holding a copy of the catalog. Also: correspondence, including a TLS from Anthony Hobson commenting on the project and Austin's reply. The collection includes three notebooks of lists created by Austin in the course of the project, as well as three folders of his miscelleneous holograph notes and photocopies of selected pages from 30 works consulted in the course of preparation. While Austin titled his project "French Sale Catalogues," his attention was almost entirely directed toward auction sales rather than sales by dealers. Also: two ALS dated 1936 from Waters S. Davis to Grolier Club librarian Ruth S. Grannis which discuss French sale catalog he is buying for the Grolier Club.

Gabriel Austin was curator of the Grolier Club (a society for bibliophiles located in New York City) from 1963 to 1965 and librarian from 1965 to 1970. Jean Grolier was a French court official and bibliophile who served in various capacities under Louis XII, Francois I, Henry II and Charles IX. Waters S. Davis was a Grolier Club member from 1932 to 1940. During the period ca. 1927-1938, Davis made several collecting trips to France in search of French booksellers and auction catalogs. He donated many of the catalogs represented in these lists to the Grolier Club library during his lifetime.
