Logbooks for voyages along the coast of California, [1779-1782?].

Fragments, probably copies, of logbooks recording two voyages along the California coast in conjunction with the frigate Favortia. The first is evidently from the frigate Princesa, which sailed from San Blas to San Francisco and back, February 11-November 21, 1779, under the command of Ignacio Arteaga. The second is perhaps also from the Princesa, which sailed from San Blas under Esteban José Martínez, on March 6, 1782, bound for Santa Barbara and other California settlements.

Captain Esteban José Martínez set sail from San Blas, Nayarit, aboard the frigate Santiago, and carried supplies for the settlements at San Diego, Monterey, and San Francisco. He landed at San Francisco on 26 June 1779. Martínez later (1788-1789) commanded the Spanish expedition along the coast of Northern California to investigate Russian activities and their potential threat to Spanish holdings.
