Samuel D. Carrell and family papers, 1847-1896.

Letters of Carrell, a Wabasha County (Minn.) resident in the early 1860s, his children, and his grandson Frederick A. They contain family news and information on his son Austin's Civil War service and death in the Tenth Minnesota Infantry (1864), farm life (1870s) in New Hampshire and in Faribault County (Minn.), and Frederick's service as a doctor on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana (1890s). Also included are Austin's diaries (2 volumes) on farm work (1861) and on his service against the Dakota Indians in western Minnesota (1862-1863); and personal and family memorabilia and genealogical data.

In what would become the state of Montana, the Blackfeet signed a treaty establishing their reservation in 1855.
