William Lee Johnson letters, 1868-1870, 1879.

Photocopies of letters written by a homesick soldier to his girlfriend at Mendota Heights, Minnesota, while serving at Fort Snelling (1868) and with the military forces occupying Corpus Christi, Texas (1869-1870) during the post-Civil War Reconstruction. The letters are addressed to "Maggie" and include some information about Galveston and Corpus Christi, and about Johnson's activities at those places. They mention sickness among the troops and desertions from military units, and tell of robberies and murders committed in the Corpus Christi area by bands of desperadoes. Johnson repeatedly tells Maggie that he misses her, and that he is anxious to return home. He also denies disparaging rumors about him which are circulating at Mendota. He mentions several other individuals and correspondents, including J. H. Benson at Mendota, from whom there is one letter. There is also an 1879 letter from Johnson to "Friend Tom" regarding Johnson's daughter Sarah.
