Letter written at New York, N.Y. to J. Meredith. "Is it a crime or offence by the laws of Maryland in a slave to escape from his master? ...please refer me to the statute which makes it so. ...do not find any such offence declared in the laws of S. Carolina and Georgia and I have, therefore, taken it for granted that it is a private injury or wrong which the master punishes if he chooses."
