The Military Laws of the State of Alabama, written in 1898, allow for four regiments of infantry. The Fourth Alabama Infantry Regiment (National Guard) was organized in May 1911. On 1917 Aug. 14, the United States War Department issued an order designating Alabama's Fourth Infantry Regiment as the 167th United States Infantry Regiment of the 42nd Rainbow Division. This series consists of the records sent to the Adjutant General's Office by the Fourth Infantry Regiment. They contain payroll records, service cards, correspondence, and muster rolls. Information in these files includes recruit names, examination results, and payroll records.
