Dartmouth College purchased a telescope in 1846 and installed it in Ira Young's garden in 1848. In 1852 Dr. George C. Shattuck of Boston became interested in improving the facilities of the Department of Natural Philosophy. Designed by Ami B. Young, the building was completed in 1854. Poor was born in Newbury, Mass. in 1871. He was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1897, receiving his PhD from Princeton University in 1904. He taught at Dartmouth College as an instructor of math and astronomy, 1898-1900, and as an instructor of astronomy, 1902-1906. He became an assistant professor of astronomy in 1906, an associate professor in 1915, and a full professor in 1917. He also taught evolution at Dartmouth College, 1920-1932.
