William S. Beebe papers, 1864 Apr. 17-June 14.

A letter from Beebe to his mother describes his participation in two separate battles during the Red River Expedition. The first part of the letter, dated April 17, 1864 from Grand Ecore, Louisiana, details a battle against Confederate forces in which Beebe takes prisoners, announces "poor Sanderson's" death, and tells of General Stone's departure from the field. In the second part of the letter, dated April 26, 1864 from Alexandria, Louisiana, Beebe describes leading his regiment across an open field while under enemy fire and successfully taking enemy ground. The second item is a copy of a letter of General N. P. Banks, dated June 14, 1864, recommending Beebe to Andrew G. Curtin, Governor of Pennsylvania.
