Volney Smith at Camp Suffolk, VA. writes to his uncle, William H. Smith; "I am completely tired of the service I offered my resignation but Gen. Dix would not see it, so I shall have to stay. ...I think our country is going to the devil as fast as it can. Every officer and soldier is completely disgusted with the war."

Dix was born in Boscawen, New Hampshire on July 24 1798, the son of Timothy Dix and Abigail Wilkins, and brother of composer Marion Dix Sullivan. He was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, and joined the US Army as an ensign in May 1813, serving under his father until the latter's death a few months later.
