This collection consists mainly of a record (including correspondence, memoranda, Trustee minutes, publicity, and other papers) of the struggle with the University of Massachusetts, in which both Freda and George Salzman were actively involved, and of various papers (minutes, correspondence, published and unpublished articles, etc.) of Science for the People and its Sociobiology Study Group. The remainder consists of Salzman's physics notebooks, writings, and lectures; papers on UMass physics department business; Salzman family correspondence; and papers concerning her cancer and its unsuccessful treatment.

Sociologist and feminist Alice S. Rossi graduated from Brooklyn College (B.A. 1947) and Columbia University (Ph. D. 1957). Physicist (Brooklyn College, B.A., 1949; University of Illinois, Ph.D., 1953), Salzman held research positions at the Universities of Wisconsin, Rochester, and Colorado, and in 1965 was appointed with her husband to the original physics dept. of U.
