Charles Derleth, Jr. was born in New York City on October 2, 1874, the son of Charles and Annie (Taubert) Derleth. His grandfather, Michael Joseph Derleth, a German, Czech, or Austrian cabinetmaker, emigrated to New York City before 1865. He and his three sons, Charles, Ferdinand, and John, operated the firm of M.J. Derleth and Sons, Cabinetmakers at 279 Rivington St. in the Bowery from 1870 to 1882. Biographical Information Charles Derleth, Jr. was born October 2, 1874 in New York. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the City College of New York in 1894 and a Civil Engineering degree from Columbia University in 1896. Derleth served as an instructor and lecturer at Columbia until 1901, when he moved west to become Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado.
