Manfred Lovin was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1892. He served in the German cavalry during World War I and later became a successful manufacturer of radio components. In 1938, Lovin was arrested and sent to Sachsenhausen concentration camp. He was able to escape the camp and flee to the United States shortly thereafter.
