Biographical sketch of Max von Portheim, a Viennese private scholar who collected books, etchings and other materials on the period of the rule of Maria Theresa, Joseph II, and Leopold II, from 1740-1792. At the time of his death, his library numbered over 20,000 items, most of which became part of the Stadtbibliothek of Vienna. Portheim also assembled a biographical and bibliographical catalogue for the period which is still in use at the Stadtbibliothek today.
